(Prensa Latina) US Colonel Larry Wilkerson has warned that an invasion of troops in Venezuela would have a terrible effect on his country.

In statements to The Real News Network, Wilkerson, former chief of staff of former Secretary of State Colin Powell and now assistant professor of government and public policy at the College of William and Mary, highlighted the professionalism of the Venezuelan Army.

President Donald Trump should be very careful to say that he would send marines or soldiers to Venezuela because the Venezuelan army would immediately muster up. It would entrench in the hills and fight the US troops as the Vietnamese did during the Vietnam War, and as the Talibans are doing in Afghanistan right now, he said.

He pointed out that the policy against Venezuela is ‘an example of US incompetence in its own hemisphere, without parallel.’

Recently, a so-called group of Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Common Sense sent a memo to President Trump, warning that White House’s policies toward Venezuela ‘appear to be on a slippery slope that could lead to war in that country and a military confrontation with Russia.’

As former intelligence officials and national security professionals, with many decades of experience, we urge you not to go so far as to take catastrophic military action against that country, said the signatories of the statement.
