Students in the military base’s school were affected by the toxic smoke, and two military personel were injured, according to the minister for Interior Relations.
TODAY IN VENEZUELA – A so-called “peaceful blockade” called for by Venezuelan opposition groups ended in a violent siege of a military airbase in La Carlota, Caracas.
Venezuelan opposition extremists with links to the right-wing coalition called the Democratic Unity Table (MUD in its Spanish acronym), burned three trucks in front of the Francisco de Miranda military airbase in La Carlota, Caracas.
The attack followed a call from opposition leaders on Friday to hold a “peaceful blockade.”
The group collided a truck with the fence surrounding the military base that separates it from the highway, toppling it. They proceeded to burn the trucks by the entrances to the base in order to prevent passage to and from the buildings.
The military base also contained an active and in-session primary school. The students were affected by heavy and toxic smoke entering the building from the burning vehicles.
Two military personel were injured in the attacks, the minister for Interior Relations, Justice and Peace, Nestor Reverol said on his twitter.
The burning of vehicles to barricade highways and transport has been a common tactic of the opposition during the protests which have been ongoing since April and have claimed at least 80 lives.
Although President Nicolas Maduro’s government has called the opposition to participate in dialogue and the constituyent assembly process, certain factions, including those affiliated to the MUD have refused, and have only called for the continuation of protests.
Reverol has urged MUD leaders “to deactivate violent groups that promote death and destruction.”
