TODAY VENEZUELA – Colombia and Venezuela are the South American countries greatly hit by a drought caused by El Niño climate phenomenon, said Tuesday experts in Bogotá, Colombia.

El Niño, which started in 2014 and worsened in 2015 in the region and worldwide one year later, “has been described as one of the strongest ones since 1950,” director of the El Niño International Research Center Rodney Martínez told journalists, Efe reported.

“In South America, definitively Colombia and Venezuela have been highly impacted by the drought,” Martínez added.

In Colombia, the natural phenomenon compelled relevant authorities to adopt special measures to reduce power consumption, such as turning off lights at night-time in public offices. For its part, the Venezuelan government implemented a power rationing plan in most cities.
